Pakistan’s Edible Oil Import Bill Projected to Reach $6 Billion in FY2026

Pakistan’s Edible Oil Import Bill Projected to Reach $6 Billion in FY2026

Pakistan’s edible oil import bill is expected to reach nearly $6 billion during fiscal year 2026, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26.

The survey highlights that domestic production currently meets only around 10 percent of the country’s edible oil demand, making imports essential for fulfilling national requirements.

During July-March FY2026, Pakistan imported 3.65 million tons of edible oil, including 0.67 million tons produced from imported oilseeds. The value of edible oil imports stood at $3.21 billion, while oilseed imports added $1.34 billion to the overall import bill.

Total edible oil availability from domestic and imported sources reached 4.17 million tons during the nine-month period.

Based on current trends, total edible oil availability is projected to increase to 5.36 million tons by the end of FY2026, reflecting growth of 15.5 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. However, domestic production is expected to remain limited at approximately 0.55 million tons, leaving the country largely dependent on imports.

The Economic Survey notes that domestic oilseed production is expected to improve in FY2026. Output from key crops such as rapeseed, mustard, sunflower, and canola is projected to increase, contributing to higher local edible oil production.

To reduce reliance on imports, the Pakistan Oilseed Department has proposed a comprehensive plan aimed at boosting indigenous edible oil production. The strategy seeks to gradually increase self-sufficiency through improved farming practices, better access to agricultural financing, efficient water management, and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies.

Officials believe these measures could help strengthen food security and reduce pressure on the country’s import bill over the coming years.
