Punjab Introduces QR Panic Buttons and GPS Tracking to Improve Ride-Hailing Safety

LAHORE — Punjab authorities have announced a new safety initiative for ride-hailing services, introducing QR panic buttons, dashboard cameras, and GPS tracking systems to enhance passenger security.

According to traffic police officials, the measures will be implemented in phases across online taxi and ride-hailing vehicles operating in Lahore and other parts of the province.

The decision was made during a meeting between Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi and representatives of ride-hailing companies, where stakeholders agreed to strengthen safety standards through modern technology.

Under the new plan, companies will be required to install QR-based emergency panic systems, dash cameras, and GPS tracking devices within a specified timeframe. Authorities have warned that non-compliant vehicles may face action.

Focus on Passenger Safety

Officials said the new systems are aimed at improving real-time monitoring, enhancing emergency response, and ensuring better security for both passengers and drivers, particularly women using ride-hailing services.

CTO Shirazi stated that the use of advanced tracking and camera technology would also help authorities investigate incidents more efficiently and improve overall road safety management.

He added that traffic police would support ride-hailing companies in implementing the QR panic button system as part of broader efforts to modernise urban transport services.

Authorities believe the initiative will increase public confidence in ride-hailing platforms and contribute to a safer and more reliable transport environment across Punjab.
