Saudi Arabia Hold Uruguay to 1-1 Draw in FIFA World Cup 2026 Opener

Saudi Arabia earned a valuable point in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after securing a 1-1 draw against Uruguay in Group H at Miami Stadium.

The Green Falcons delivered a disciplined performance and took the lead late in the first half through defender Abdulelah Alamri, who found the net in the 41st minute to put Saudi Arabia ahead.

Uruguay, two-time FIFA World Cup champions, controlled large periods of possession and continued to press for an equalizer throughout the second half. Their efforts paid off in the 80th minute when Maxi Araujo scored to level the match and rescue a point for his side.

The result leaves Group H wide open, particularly after another closely contested match earlier in the day saw Spain drop points in their tournament opener.

Saudi Arabia impressed with their defensive organization and determination, while goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais played an important role by making several key saves to keep his team in the contest.

Speaking after the match, Saudi Arabia head coach Georgios Donis praised his players for their commitment and fighting spirit, describing the result as a positive start against a strong opponent.

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa acknowledged that his team had opportunities to secure victory but emphasized the importance of improving performance in the upcoming group-stage fixtures.

The draw gives Saudi Arabia confidence heading into their remaining Group H matches as they aim to advance to the knockout stage for the first time since the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Both teams will now shift their focus to their next group-stage encounters as the race for qualification continues.
