Amy Pu’s Journey as a Professional Boxing Referee
Amy Pu is making history in British boxing as one of the first female professional referees in the sport, paving the way for greater diversity inside the ring.
Born in Taiwan, Pu initially moved to London for her studies before developing an interest in boxing through fitness training. What began as a recreational activity soon evolved into a deeper involvement in the sport, leading her from amateur competitions to officiating bouts.
Pu’s progression into professional refereeing came after she was encouraged by officials from the British Boxing Board of Control. In 2023, she stepped into the professional ranks, later making her historic debut in the UK at York Hall in 2024.
Since then, she has continued to build her career, officiating multiple professional fights and gaining recognition for her calm and professional approach inside the ring.
Reflecting on her journey, Pu has spoken about the challenges of working in a traditionally male-dominated environment, while also highlighting the importance of being judged for her performance rather than gender or ethnicity.
She has emphasized that her focus remains on maintaining high standards and consistency in officiating, while also hoping to inspire young women to consider careers in boxing beyond just competing as athletes.
Pu, who also works as a life coach and podcast host, has already officiated on major fight cards, including events at Wembley Stadium. Looking ahead, she aims to take charge of world title fights and continue progressing on the global stage.
Her journey is widely seen as a step forward for inclusion in boxing and a reflection of changing opportunities within the sport.
