Punjab Sets Up Digital Media Cell to Monitor Online Hate Content

The Punjab government has established a dedicated Digital Media Cell under the Home Department to monitor and help control the spread of sectarian, violent, and hate-related content on social media during Muharram-ul-Haram.

According to officials, the initiative is part of broader security arrangements aimed at maintaining peace, ensuring law and order, and promoting interfaith harmony across the province.

The Chief Secretary Punjab visited the newly established facility and reviewed its cyber monitoring system, which operates in real time to track online activity.

During the visit, he emphasized that maintaining peace during Muharram is a shared responsibility and directed authorities to take swift legal action against individuals or accounts involved in spreading hate or provocative material online.

Secretary Home Dr Ahmad Javed Qazi briefed officials on the security and monitoring plan for the province. He said that comprehensive arrangements have been made for thousands of religious gatherings and processions across Punjab.

He added that a large number of police personnel, along with support from security forces, have been deployed to ensure safety and order during the month.

Officials also reported that thousands of social media accounts suspected of spreading harmful content have been identified and referred to the relevant authorities for action in coordination with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Preventive measures have also been implemented, including restrictions on individuals identified as potentially inciting tension, while others under observation are being closely monitored.

The Home Department stated that the Digital Media Cell is operating 24/7 to respond quickly to reports of objectionable content and support timely legal action.

Authorities have also urged citizens to assist by reporting any harmful or inflammatory material circulating online through official contact channels to help maintain peace during Muharram.
