Naomi Osaka Retires from Bad Homburg Open Final Ahead of Wimbledon

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Naomi Osaka’s impressive run at the Bad Homburg Open came to an unexpected end on Saturday after the former world No. 1 retired during the women’s singles final against Karolina Muchova.

Osaka lost the opening set 6-1 before withdrawing after the first game of the second set following a medical assessment. The Japanese star received treatment on her left ankle, raising concerns just days before the start of Wimbledon 2026.

The 28-year-old had enjoyed an outstanding week in Germany, reaching her first grass-court final without dropping a set. It was also her strongest performance on the surface in recent years as she prepared for the third Grand Slam tournament of the season.

However, Osaka struggled to match Muchova’s consistency in the final. The Czech player quickly took control of the match with aggressive baseline play and accurate shot-making, limiting Osaka’s opportunities to build momentum.

After briefly leaving the court for medical attention, Osaka returned but decided she could not continue after one game in the second set.

The victory handed Karolina Muchova the Bad Homburg Open title and valuable WTA ranking points ahead of Wimbledon. The Czech star has enjoyed one of the best seasons of her career and will head into the Grand Slam with renewed confidence.

Attention now turns to Osaka’s fitness as Wimbledon begins on June 29. Fans will be hoping the ankle issue is only a minor setback and that the four-time Grand Slam champion will be ready to compete in London.
