Pakistan Advances Plan to Convert Jamshoro Power Plant to Thar Coal

Pakistan has taken another step toward converting the 660-megawatt Jamshoro Power Plant to locally sourced Thar coal, as key stakeholders met to discuss fuel supply arrangements and the project’s phased implementation.

The meeting, held at the Thar Block-1 coal mine, included representatives from K-Electric (KE), Jamshoro Power Company Limited (JPCL), Sino Sindh Resources Limited (SSRL), the Thar Coal Energy Board, and the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB).

Focus on Local Coal Supply

Participants reviewed plans for supplying coal during the plant’s interim blended-fuel phase before its eventual transition to full operation on indigenous Thar coal.

The discussions also explored how the project could support K-Electric’s broader strategy of increasing the use of local fuel sources across its power generation portfolio.

Feasibility Study Supports Project

The latest discussions follow the completion of an independent feasibility study commissioned by K-Electric and carried out by German engineering firm Dornier Power and Heat GmbH.

According to the study, converting the Jamshoro power plant to Thar coal is both technically feasible and economically viable.

The report estimates the project could generate approximately $3.2 billion in economic benefits over the remaining operational life of the plant by reducing reliance on imported coal and helping conserve foreign exchange reserves.

Potential Expansion of Thar Coal Production

K-Electric also noted that the combined coal demand from the Jamshoro project and its future power generation plans could support an expansion of Thar Block-1’s annual production capacity.

If implemented, production could increase from the current 7.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to around 15.6 MTPA, helping strengthen Pakistan’s use of indigenous energy resources and supporting long-term energy security.
