Sony Reportedly Preparing New Compact Cinema Camera With Advanced Video Features
Sony is reportedly preparing to introduce a new compact Cinema Line camera that could bring several advanced filmmaking features to a smaller body. While the company has not officially confirmed the product, industry reports suggest the announcement could take place during the second half of July.
The upcoming camera is widely rumored to be called either the Sony FX5 or Sony FX4, with different sources using different names for what appears to be the same device.
Expected Features
According to multiple reports, the camera may include several notable upgrades designed for professional video production.
5K Open-Gate Recording
One of the most talked-about features is 5K open-gate recording using the camera’s full sensor. This allows filmmakers to capture more image area, making it easier to crop footage into multiple aspect ratios for platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and traditional cinema.
Triple-Base ISO
The camera is also expected to introduce triple-base ISO, a feature that could provide three native sensitivity settings for different lighting conditions.
This technology is designed to improve image quality by reducing noise while maintaining strong dynamic range in both bright and low-light environments. If confirmed, it would be the first Sony camera to feature triple-base ISO.
Internal X-OCN RAW Recording
Reports also suggest the new model could support internal X-OCN RAW recording, bringing one of Sony’s professional cinema recording formats to a compact Cinema Line body.
X-OCN is widely used in Sony’s high-end cinema cameras and is designed to preserve extensive image detail and color information for professional post-production workflows.
Sensor Details Still Unconfirmed
The camera’s image sensor remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
Earlier rumors suggested Sony could use a new global shutter sensor, while more recent reports indicate the final sensor technology has not yet been confirmed.
Some industry discussions have mentioned a possible 16-megapixel stacked sensor capable of recording 5K video at high frame rates, although there is no official confirmation that this sensor will be used.
Professional Design
The upcoming model is expected to retain the compact size of the popular FX3, while offering a more cinema-focused design.
Rumored features include:
- Modular body with professional controls
- Support for XLR audio handles
- Compatibility with external electronic viewfinders
- SDI connectivity for professional video production
- Improved button layout for filmmakers
Sony has also registered an unreleased FX-series camera with Chinese certification authorities, confirming that another Cinema Line model is in development. However, the filing does not reveal the product name or specifications.
Launch Expected in July
Although Sony has not officially announced the camera, multiple industry sources expect the company to unveil the new Cinema Line model later this month.
If the reported specifications prove accurate, the camera could become a strong option for filmmakers seeking a compact professional cinema camera with advanced recording capabilities. Until Sony makes an official announcement, however, all specifications and product details should be considered unconfirmed.
