Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail
LAHORE: Newly appointed Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has outlined his vision for the national team, saying discipline, fitness, and consistent performances will be the foundation of Pakistan’s efforts to improve in Test cricket.
Speaking during a recent podcast released by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Babar said he is returning to the leadership role with greater experience, better planning, and a clearer understanding of the challenges of international cricket.
Focus on Professional Standards
Babar stressed that every player must maintain high standards of discipline and physical fitness to help the team compete consistently at the highest level.
He explained that success in Test cricket depends not only on talent but also on preparation, professionalism, and teamwork.
Supporting Young Players
The Pakistan captain said developing young cricketers remains one of his priorities. He believes experienced players have an important role in helping newcomers adjust to the demands and pressure of international cricket.
According to Babar, creating a positive dressing-room environment and maintaining open communication can help younger players perform with greater confidence.
Learning From Previous Captaincy
Reflecting on his earlier spell as Test captain, Babar acknowledged that he made both successful and unsuccessful decisions. He said those experiences helped him grow as a leader and shaped his approach for his second tenure.
He added that every challenge provides an opportunity to learn and improve.
Importance of Fitness in Test Cricket
Babar believes Pakistan’s recent struggles in the longest format were partly linked to fitness levels.
He noted that physical conditioning plays a major role in batting, bowling, and fielding throughout five-day matches. Improving endurance and maintaining intensity over long periods, he said, are key goals for the current squad.
The team has recently completed an intensive training camp, where players focused on fitness, fielding, and match preparation under demanding weather conditions.
Confidence in Pakistan’s Bowling Attack
Despite changes in the pace bowling unit, Babar expressed confidence in the available fast bowlers, saying they possess valuable domestic and international experience.
He also highlighted the importance of having genuine fast bowlers capable of consistently delivering high pace, which gives captains more tactical options during Test matches.
Preparing for Upcoming Tours
Pakistan will begin its upcoming Test campaign with a two-match series against the West Indies national cricket team before traveling to face the England cricket team in a three-Test series.
Babar said the coaching staff has prepared training sessions designed to simulate overseas conditions, helping players adapt before the tours begin.
Message to Fans and Young Cricketers
The Pakistan skipper encouraged aspiring cricketers to stay patient, continue working hard, and believe in their abilities.
