Argentina and Switzerland Renew FIFA World Cup Knockout Rivalry After 12 Years

KANSAS CITY: Argentina and Switzerland are set to meet once again in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, renewing a memorable rivalry that dates back to their dramatic Round of 16 encounter at the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

Twelve years ago, Argentina secured a hard-fought victory when Ángel Di María scored the decisive goal in extra time, sending Lionel Messi’s team into the quarter-finals after a closely contested match.

Defending Champions Face Confident Switzerland

Argentina enter the quarter-final as the defending FIFA World Cup champions, having lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022 after finishing runners-up in 2014.

Although captain Lionel Messi, now 39, is in the later stages of his remarkable career, he continues to play a vital role for Argentina. In the previous round, Messi inspired his side’s dramatic comeback victory over Egypt after Argentina recovered from a two-goal deficit late in the match.

Speaking after that win, Messi praised his teammates for their determination and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

Switzerland Making History

Switzerland arrive with confidence after reaching the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years.

The Swiss secured their place by defeating Colombia in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw, marking one of the country’s most significant achievements on football’s biggest stage.

Head coach Murat Yakin believes his side can challenge the defending champions despite Argentina’s experience.

Familiar Faces Meet Again

Only three players remain from the teams that met in Brazil in 2014: Lionel Messi, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka, and defender Ricardo Rodríguez.

Xhaka described it as a privilege to compete against Messi once again, while Rodríguez acknowledged Argentina’s quality and experience ahead of the highly anticipated clash.

Switzerland are also hopeful midfielder Johan Manzambi will recover from a knee injury in time for the match after missing the victory over Colombia.

Coaches Expect Tactical Battle

Swiss coach Murat Yakin believes recent matches have shown that Argentina can be challenged and expects an intriguing tactical contest.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni also anticipates a difficult encounter, praising Switzerland’s strong football tradition and experienced squad.

With a place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals at stake, both teams will look to write another memorable chapter in a rivalry that has produced one of the tournament’s classic knockout matches.
