Egypt Gives Hero’s Welcome to National Team After Historic FIFA World Cup Campaign
EL ALAMEIN: Thousands of Egyptian football fans gathered on Friday to welcome home the national team following the country’s most successful FIFA World Cup campaign to date.
Supporters lined the streets waving Egyptian flags, singing patriotic songs, and displaying banners celebrating the team’s achievements after reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history.
The players and coaching staff arrived at El Alamein International Airport, where they were greeted by enthusiastic crowds. Many fans also held posters of team captain Mohamed Salah, thanking him for his leadership throughout the tournament.
Following their arrival, the squad traveled through New Alamein in an open-top bus, acknowledging supporters who had gathered along the route to celebrate the team’s historic performance.
Presidential Reception Planned
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is scheduled to receive the players, coaching staff, and team officials during a special ceremony on Saturday in recognition of their achievements.
Among the supporters were fans carrying posters of head coach Hossam Hassan, expressing appreciation for his leadership during the tournament.
Historic World Cup Journey
Egypt’s World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 16 after a closely contested 3-2 defeat to Argentina.
Despite the result, the team earned widespread praise after recording the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup victory and advancing further than any previous Egyptian side.
During the tournament, Egypt defeated New Zealand in the group stage before overcoming Australia in a penalty shootout to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
Coaching Staff Receive Contract Extension
Ahead of the team’s return, the Egyptian Football Association announced contract extensions for head coach Hossam Hassan and his assistant Ibrahim Hassan.
While the federation did not reveal the contract length, local media reports suggest the new agreement could keep the coaching staff in charge until 2030.
Since taking over in 2024, Hossam Hassan has guided Egypt to significant progress, including a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, qualification for the FIFA World Cup after an eight-year absence, and an impressive overall record during his tenure.
