Tbilisi, Georgia: The penultimate day of the World Rugby U20 Championship 2026 produced several memorable results, with the United States recording its first-ever victory in tournament history, while Scotland matched its best finish by securing fifth place.
Australia and Japan also ended their campaigns with victories, while attention now turns to Saturday’s championship final between France and defending champions South Africa.
USA Claims Historic First Tournament Victory
The United States achieved a milestone by defeating Uruguay 39-15 in the 15th-place playoff, ending a long wait for its first victory at the World Rugby U20 Championship.
Uruguay made a strong start, taking a 15-0 lead through three first-half tries. However, the USA responded before halftime and dominated the second half, scoring 39 unanswered points to complete an impressive comeback.
The victory marks the USA’s first win in the competition after multiple previous appearances.
Scotland Secures Fifth Place
Scotland defeated Wales 28-21 in a closely contested fifth-place playoff, equaling the nation’s best-ever finish at the tournament, previously achieved in 2017.
After falling behind early, Scotland recovered with four tries and held off late pressure despite finishing the match with reduced numbers following two yellow cards.
The result completed a successful campaign for the Scottish side after narrowly missing a semifinal place.
Australia Finishes Seventh
Australia claimed seventh place with a convincing 52-29 victory over Argentina.
The Junior Wallabies built a comfortable first-half advantage with several well-worked tries and maintained control throughout the second half to secure the win.
The result gave Australia a positive finish to its tournament campaign.
Japan Ends Tournament on a High
Japan defeated Spain 34-26 in the 13th-place playoff, recording its second victory of the tournament.
The match featured several yellow cards, with Japan taking advantage of numerical superiority during key stages of the contest.
The victory marked the first time Japan has won two matches during a single World Rugby U20 Championship.
Championship Final Set
The 2026 tournament concludes on Saturday with France taking on South Africa in the championship final.
France, the winners of this year’s U20 Six Nations, will face the defending champions from South Africa in a highly anticipated title match.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand and England will compete for third place, while additional classification matches will determine the remaining final standings.
The World Rugby U20 Championship continues to showcase many of the sport’s brightest young talents, with players aiming to progress to senior international rugby in the coming years.
