Japan Finishes Opening Round Unbeaten as WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Play-Offs Are Confirmed

Lima, Peru: The Opening Round of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup 2026 – Group Lima concluded on Friday, with Japan finishing the group stage undefeated and the tournament’s Play-Off matchups now confirmed.

The next stage of the competition will take place at Villa María del Triunfo, where teams will compete for two qualification spots in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027.

Play-Off Schedule Confirmed

Following the completion of the Opening Round:

  • Japan will face Puerto Rico for the first direct qualification spot in the 2027 Finals.
  • Great Britain will play Venezuela in an elimination game.
  • The winner of Great Britain vs. Venezuela will meet the loser of Japan vs. Puerto Rico in a repechage game to determine the second qualifying team.
  • Philippines and Peru will compete for fifth place in the final standings.

Japan Completes Perfect Group Stage

Japan finished the Opening Round with a 5-0 record, maintaining an unbeaten campaign after defeating Puerto Rico 4-2 in extra innings.

The victory secured Japan’s position at the top of the standings heading into the Play-Off stage.

Puerto Rico Secures Second Place

Puerto Rico earned second place after defeating Great Britain 3-0 earlier in the day.

Pitcher Aleshia Ocasio delivered an outstanding performance, recording 14 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout while also contributing offensively with two hits.

Puerto Rico scored twice in the third inning before adding another run in the sixth to seal the victory.

Venezuela Finishes Third

Venezuela claimed third place with a 10-3 win over Great Britain in a game shortened to six innings under the run-rule.

Valentina Linares drove in four runs, including a three-run home run, while Eila Infante collected three hits to help power the Venezuelan offense.

The team finished with 13 hits as it secured a place in the Play-Offs.

Philippines Ends Tournament on a High

The Philippines closed the Opening Round with an 8-0 victory over host nation Peru in five innings, securing fifth place in the group standings.

Road to the 2027 Finals

With the Opening Round complete, attention now shifts to Saturday’s decisive Play-Off matches, where four teams remain in contention for two available places at the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027.

Japan enters the next stage with an unbeaten record, while Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Great Britain continue their pursuit of qualification in Lima.
