Farmers Warn of Rising Wheat Prices Amid Supply Concerns

Farmer representatives have expressed concern over Pakistan’s wheat situation, warning that continued supply challenges could lead to higher wheat prices if timely measures are not taken.

In a joint statement, leaders of the Markazi Kisan League (MKL) said policy decisions and lower-than-expected wheat procurement have contributed to growing concerns about the country’s wheat availability.

Concerns Over Wheat Procurement

According to the farmer representatives, wheat procurement during the current season remained below initial targets in some provinces.

They stated that:

  • Punjab procured around 480,000 tonnes of wheat against a higher procurement target.
  • Sindh procured approximately 200,000 tonnes.

The leaders said improved procurement and supply planning could help stabilize the market.

Warning Over Wheat Prices

The MKL cautioned that if supply issues continue, wheat prices could increase further in the coming months.

They noted that rising wheat prices may also affect the cost of flour and other wheat-based food products, impacting household budgets.

Imports Under Consideration

Farmer representatives said Pakistan imported a significant quantity of wheat last year to help meet domestic demand. They added that additional imports may be considered if required, depending on future supply estimates.

Government Reviewing the Situation

Authorities are currently holding discussions to assess wheat availability and provincial requirements.

According to reports:

  • Punjab has requested additional wheat from federal reserves.
  • Sindh has also sought extra wheat supplies to meet its needs.
  • Officials are reviewing future demand estimates before making decisions on additional procurement or imports.

The government is expected to announce further measures after completing consultations with provincial authorities and reviewing updated supply data.
