Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns, Cites Health Reasons
Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing health-related concerns, according to an official statement released by his office.
The 76-year-old president said recent medical examinations diagnosed him with autonomic neuropathy, a condition that has caused occasional episodes of temporary loss of consciousness.
In his statement, Shahabuddin said his health condition had made it difficult for him to continue carrying out the responsibilities of the presidency.
According to officials, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) will perform the duties of the president until a new head of state is elected in accordance with constitutional procedures.
Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as Bangladesh’s president in April 2023 after being elected by parliament.
His tenure included a period of significant political developments following the events of 2024, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country after widespread protests.
Officials have not yet announced a timeline for the election of Bangladesh’s next president.
The transition is expected to follow the constitutional process outlined under Bangladesh’s legal framework.
