Gilgit-Baltistan Proposes Direct Flights Between Skardu and China’s Kashgar
The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan has proposed launching direct flights between Skardu and Kashgar, aiming to strengthen air connectivity between northern Pakistan and China’s Xinjiang region.
The proposal is expected to support tourism, trade, and economic cooperation while making travel more convenient for visitors and businesses.
Proposal Discussed During High-Level Meeting
The idea was discussed during a meeting between Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain Azar and Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong.
According to officials, the proposed route would improve transportation links and encourage greater interaction between people in Gilgit-Baltistan and China’s Xinjiang region.
Focus on Tourism and Trade
If approved, the direct flights could make it easier for tourists and business travelers to move between the two regions.
Officials believe the new air link has the potential to:
- Boost tourism in northern Pakistan
- Promote cross-border trade
- Support regional economic cooperation
- Improve travel convenience for visitors and investors
Visa-on-Arrival Proposal for Chinese Tourists
During the meeting, the Gilgit-Baltistan government also proposed introducing a visa-on-arrival facility for Chinese tourists visiting destinations such as Hunza.
The proposal would require approval from the federal government before implementation.
Investment Opportunities Highlighted
Gilgit-Baltistan officials invited Chinese companies to explore investment opportunities in several sectors, including:
- Tourism
- Mining
- Hydropower
- Renewable energy
- Infrastructure development
The government said increased investment could contribute to long-term economic growth and regional development.
Proposal Under Consideration
Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong said the proposals discussed during the meeting would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for further review.
