Pakistan Sees Potential to Double US Trade to $20 Billion Over Five Years
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has expressed confidence that bilateral trade between Pakistan and the United States could reach $20 billion over the next five years by expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and technology.
Trade Growth Remains a Key Priority
Speaking during a meeting with a visiting delegation of US lawmakers and business representatives in Islamabad, Dar said stronger economic ties remain an important part of the relationship between the two countries.
He noted that the United States is Pakistan’s largest single-country export destination and said bilateral goods trade reached approximately $9.4 billion during the last fiscal year.
According to Dar, both countries have opportunities to expand cooperation by building on the strengths of their respective economies.
Focus on Investment and Business Cooperation
The deputy prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to attract foreign investment through economic reforms and an improved business environment.
He said the government continues to encourage investment in sectors including:
- Information Technology (IT)
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Energy
- Manufacturing
- Critical Minerals
- Agriculture
Dar also pointed to the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in providing streamlined support for investors through a one-window facilitation system.
US Companies Continue Operating in Pakistan
Dar noted that more than 80 American companies currently operate in Pakistan, describing their presence as a sign of continued business interest in the country’s market and long-term economic potential.
He added that Pakistan is working to simplify regulatory procedures, improve transparency, and create conditions that support new business investments.
Delegation Discusses Bilateral Cooperation
The visiting delegation included US Congress members Ryan Zinke and Michael Baumgartner, who discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, energy, technology, and other sectors.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments and emphasized the importance of continued parliamentary engagement to strengthen bilateral relations.
Commitment to Long-Term Economic Partnership
Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding economic cooperation with the United States and said the government aims to create more opportunities for businesses, encourage investment, and strengthen commercial partnerships that benefit both countries.
He also reiterated Pakistan’s support for dialogue and diplomacy as key principles for promoting regional stability and international cooperation.
