Sindh Forms Inquiry Committee to Investigate HIV Cases Near Karachi Hospital
The Sindh government has established a five-member inquiry committee after HIV screening conducted near a SESSI-run hospital in Landhi, Karachi, identified 10 positive cases.
Committee Given Seven Days to Submit Report
According to officials, around 2,000 people have been screened in the area so far. The newly formed committee has been tasked with verifying the reported cases, determining whether they are linked, and submitting its findings within seven days.
Investigation to Review Hospital Procedures
As part of the inquiry, the committee will examine several aspects of the hospital’s operations, including:
- Laboratory test reports
- Injection and medical procedures
- Use of disposable syringes and needles
- Infection prevention and control measures
- Availability of medicines and medical supplies
- Biomedical waste management practices
The investigation aims to assess whether established healthcare protocols were properly followed.
Patient Information to Be Verified
Officials said the committee will also collect relevant information about affected patients, including children and, where applicable, their parents, to help understand the reported cases and identify any possible connections.
Findings and Recommendations Expected
The committee has been directed to prepare a detailed report outlining its findings and recommendations. If any procedural shortcomings or negligence are identified during the investigation, the report will specify the relevant responsibilities.
Authorities have stated that the source of the reported HIV cases has not yet been confirmed, and the inquiry is expected to provide further clarity once completed.
