NDMA Warns of Possible Flooding in Northern Areas
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert regarding the risk of flooding caused by possible glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in several northern parts of Pakistan.
The alert was issued by the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Centre amid growing concerns over the impact of monsoon rainfall and rising temperatures on glacial lakes in mountainous regions.
According to the authority, increased temperatures combined with seasonal rainfall could raise the risk of glacial lakes overflowing or bursting, potentially triggering sudden flooding in nearby areas.
Areas Placed on Alert
The NDMA has identified several vulnerable areas in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. These include:
- Ghizer
- Hunza
- Nagar
- Shigar
- Gilgit
- Rondu
- Diamer
- Astore
- Skardu
- Ghanche
- Kharmang
- Neelum Valley
The authority has also warned of possible flooding and landslides in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat and Shangla, along with surrounding mountainous areas.
Landslide Risk Also Highlighted
Koohistan and other nearby hilly regions have also been placed on alert due to the potential for flooding and landslides.
The NDMA’s warning highlights the need for increased vigilance in vulnerable mountainous areas as weather conditions continue to create risks associated with glacial lakes, heavy rainfall and unstable slopes.
Residents and local authorities in the identified areas are advised to remain alert and follow official instructions in case of any emergency or evacuation advisory.
