Army Says Any May 9-Like Agitation Will Be Dealt With Under Law

The military leadership has stressed the importance of internal stability and said any attempt to create a situation similar to the events of May 9 would be dealt with according to the law.

The statement was issued after the 277th Corps Commanders’ Conference, chaired by Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting reviewed Pakistan’s security environment and discussed measures to maintain a high level of operational readiness.

Internal Stability Discussed

The forum said attempts to create unrest or agitation, regardless of the stated reason, would be handled through legal measures.

The military’s media wing said the leadership emphasised maintaining internal stability while ensuring that the rule of law was followed.

The conference also reviewed ongoing counter-terrorism operations and acknowledged the work of law enforcement agencies in intelligence-based operations.

According to ISPR, the participants stressed that security operations should be supported by measures including better governance at the grassroots level, engagement with the public, action against links between terrorism and organised crime, and improvements in police capabilities.

These measures, the statement said, are to be pursued in line with the National Action Plan and Vision Azm-e-Istehkam.

Focus on Security Threats From Afghanistan

The conference also reaffirmed Pakistan’s stated right to self-defence and discussed targeted action against terrorism that Islamabad says originates from Afghanistan.

ISPR attributed responsibility for the consequences of such attacks to the Afghan Taliban leadership, alleging that it has facilitated militant activity. These claims were presented as the military’s position.

The forum also reviewed regional security developments and reaffirmed the armed forces’ readiness to respond to security threats.

Makkah Defence Agreement Welcomed

The military leadership welcomed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

According to ISPR, the forum viewed the agreement as strengthening the longstanding strategic and collective defence relationship between the three countries.

The participants also condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and expressed solidarity with the Saudi government. The forum reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the security and sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain.

Kashmir Position Reaffirmed

The conference also reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position on Jammu and Kashmir.

According to ISPR, the military leadership supported a resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The forum also offered Fateha for members of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and civilians who lost their lives while serving the country.

Munir Reviews Operational Preparedness

In his concluding remarks, Field Marshal Asim Munir praised the formations for their operational preparedness and professionalism.

He directed commanders to continue strengthening intelligence-based operations and improving combat capabilities through modern technology, training and greater integration across different operational domains.

The army chief also expressed confidence that the armed forces were prepared to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security, with what the statement described as continued public support.
