Body of Pakistani Climber Dr Asma Mushtaq Reaches Spantik Base Camp

The body of Pakistani mountaineer Dr Asma Mushtaq has been safely transported to the base camp of Spantik Peak following a difficult recovery operation in the Karakoram mountains.

Information Minister Ataullah Tarar confirmed the development, saying the Arandu Volunteer Rescue Team successfully brought her body to Spantik Base Camp.

Body to Be Airlifted to Skardu

In a post on X, the information minister said Dr Asma’s body would soon be airlifted from the Spantik Base Camp to Skardu.

From Skardu, the body is expected to be transported to Lahore, depending on the availability of a suitable flight.

Tarar said further information about the transportation arrangements would be provided as the process moves forward.

Dr Asma Died During Spantik Descent

Dr Asma Mushtaq died on August 20 after suffering a serious medical emergency at high altitude while descending from Spantik Mountain.

Spantik, which rises to approximately 7,027 metres, is located in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range and is considered one of the country’s prominent high-altitude climbing destinations.

The medical emergency occurred during her descent, leading to a challenging recovery effort in the mountainous region.

Difficult Recovery Operation

The recovery mission continued for an extended period because of harsh weather and difficult conditions at high altitude.

Her body was recovered from the mountain area two days before reaching the base camp. The Arandu Volunteer Rescue Team then carried out the difficult task of bringing it safely to Spantik Base Camp.

The next stage of the operation involves arranging an airlift to Skardu, followed by transportation to Lahore if a suitable flight is available.

Authorities are expected to provide additional updates as arrangements for the onward transportation are finalised.
