Cristiano Ronaldo Set to Lead Portugal at Record Sixth World Cup
Veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo is set to captain Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a historic sixth appearance in the tournament.
The 41-year-old striker, who currently plays for Saudi club Al Nassr, was named in Portugal’s squad announced by head coach Roberto Martinez on Tuesday.
Ronaldo remains the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 143 goals and continues to play a key leadership role for the national team.
Portugal will be aiming for their first-ever World Cup title, with Ronaldo set to feature in what he has previously indicated could be his final appearance in the tournament.
The squad also includes several top European stars, such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Rafael Leão, along with rising talents and experienced internationals across all positions.
Portugal’s squad features a strong mix of players from major European clubs, including representatives from Manchester United, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Coach Roberto Martinez said Ronaldo’s experience and professionalism remain valuable for the squad, noting that World Cup performance is not solely dependent on age or club form.
Portugal will play a series of warm-up matches ahead of the tournament, including friendlies against Chile and Nigeria, before beginning their World Cup campaign in June.
The team will face DR Congo in their opening match, followed by group-stage fixtures against Uzbekistan and Colombia.
With Ronaldo still leading the line, Portugal will once again rely on his experience as they chase their long-awaited first World Cup trophy.
