At least 21 people have been killed as heavy and continuous rainfall battered large parts of southern and central China, triggering widespread flooding, transport disruption, and emergency responses in multiple provinces.

Authorities said torrential rains affected several regions, including Jiangxi, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan.

The China Meteorological Administration warned that these areas remain at high risk of flash floods, landslides, and urban waterlogging due to persistent rainfall.

Emergency services reported multiple fatalities across different incidents, including a case in Guangxi where a vehicle carrying farm workers was swept into a flooded river. Other deaths were reported in Guizhou, Hunan, and Hubei provinces as heavy rain overwhelmed low-lying areas.

Emergency Response and Relief Efforts

The Chinese government has allocated around 150 million yuan (about $22 million) for disaster relief and has activated emergency response systems in affected regions.

Local authorities are working to restore electricity, reopen transport routes, and support displaced residents as floodwaters continue to affect homes, roads, and public infrastructure.

Weather Conditions Still Severe

Meteorological officials said the extreme rainfall is linked to large-scale moisture convergence from the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.

They warned that the weather system is expected to move east and south over the coming days, with heavy rainfall likely along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
