FIFA World Cup 2026 Sets New Records for Attendance and Global Viewership

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the most-attended tournament in the competition’s history, with millions of fans filling stadiums across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to FIFA, the expanded 48-team format helped the tournament achieve record-breaking attendance, while global television audiences and digital engagement also reached new highs.
Record Stadium Attendance
FIFA reported that more than 6.6 million spectators attended matches before the tournament concluded, with media estimates placing total attendance at approximately 6.8 million fans across all 104 matches.
The tournament also achieved an impressive 99.7% average stadium occupancy, despite discussions surrounding ticket prices.
On average, more than 65,000 fans attended each match, making it the highest-attended FIFA World Cup to date.
Expanded Tournament Drives Growth
The 2026 edition was the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 national teams, an increase from the previous 32-team format.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the larger tournament exceeded expectations and contributed to record levels of fan participation and worldwide interest.
Television and Digital Reach
FIFA stated that television audiences around the world reached record levels during the tournament, although detailed global viewership figures have not yet been officially released.
The organization also reported strong engagement across digital platforms, estimating that billions of people interacted with World Cup-related content during the competition.
Financial Growth
The expanded tournament is also expected to generate record revenues for FIFA.
Before the event, FIFA projected total revenues of more than €7 billion (approximately $8 billion) for 2026, representing a significant increase compared to the previous World Cup.
Broadcasting rights, sponsorship agreements, and commercial partnerships were among the major contributors to the projected revenue growth.
Increased Prize Money
FIFA also increased the tournament’s total prize fund.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup prize pool reached approximately $871 million, with every participating nation guaranteed financial support for taking part in the competition.
The tournament champions received the largest share of the prize money.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of the expanded competition, FIFA has confirmed that discussions have taken place regarding the possibility of increasing the number of participating teams for future editions of the World Cup.
No final decision has been announced, but officials continue to evaluate options as preparations begin for the tournament’s centenary edition in 2030.
