FIFA’s Expanded World Cup Sparks Debate Over Size, Quality, and Player Welfare

A major debate has emerged ahead of the expanded FIFA World Cup as critics question whether the tournament has become too large to maintain its quality and excitement.

The upcoming edition, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature a record 48 teams and a total of 104 matches — the biggest format in the competition’s history.

According to analysts and former players, the expansion could dilute the intensity of early-stage matches, as more teams qualify and fewer “high-stakes” group-stage clashes take place.

Former U.S. international Clint Dempsey said the tournament may lose some excitement, suggesting that the real competition only begins in the knockout stages.

Football writer Jonathan Wilson also warned that the growing number of matches could reduce overall viewer engagement, arguing that many fans may not follow the full schedule due to its scale.

FIFA, however, maintains that the expanded format will help grow the sport globally by giving more nations a chance to compete on football’s biggest stage. President Gianni Infantino has previously said the changes will make football “truly global.”

The tournament will also feature several debutant teams, including nations such as Uzbekistan, Jordan, and Cape Verde, reflecting the wider global reach of the competition.

At the same time, concerns are growing about player workload, with unions warning that an increasingly crowded football calendar could impact physical and mental health. Some experts argue that top players are being pushed too hard due to back-to-back international and club tournaments.

Despite criticism, FIFA expects strong global demand for tickets and broadcasting rights, with billions of dollars in projected revenue and widespread international coverage already confirmed.
