Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Debuts With 200MP Telephoto Camera and 6,800mAh Battery
Huawei has introduced its latest flagship smartphone, the Mate 90 Pro Max, in China, with a strong emphasis on camera performance, display technology and battery capacity.
The smartphone features a 200MP RYYB periscope telephoto camera, a large 6.9-inch OLED display and a 6,800mAh battery. Selected versions are powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro chipset and come with up to 16GB of RAM.
Display and Design
The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max comes with a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display offering a resolution of 2848 × 1320 pixels.
The screen supports an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, along with 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. Huawei claims local peak brightness of up to 12,000 nits.
The display supports the BT.2020 color gamut and is protected by Kunlun Glass. The Collector’s Edition uses Basalt Kunlun Glass for additional protection.
The phone is available in Rose Gold, Jade Green, Crystal White and Obsidian Black. It also carries IP68 and IP69 ratings for resistance against dust and water.
Performance and Software
The 16GB RAM variants of the Mate 90 Pro Max are equipped with Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, while the 12GB version uses the Kirin 9050.
The device runs HarmonyOS 7 and supports several connectivity features, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, eSIM and Huawei’s StarLight E2.0 technology.
Storage options include 512GB and 1TB, while there is no microSD card slot listed.
Camera Features
Photography is one of the key features of the Mate 90 Pro Max.
The rear camera system consists of a 50MP primary camera with a 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor, optical image stabilisation and a variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0.
It is accompanied by a 40MP ultrawide camera and a 200MP periscope telephoto camera. The telephoto sensor also measures 1/1.28-inch and includes optical image stabilisation.
The telephoto camera supports 4x optical zoom, 8x optical-quality zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. Huawei has also integrated its third-generation Red Maple primary-colour camera technology for improved colour reproduction.
The Collector’s Edition can additionally be used with the optional Ruiying Z10 camera module. The accessory adds a 1-inch RYYB sensor, a 24-240mm focal range, 10x continuous optical zoom and an f/2.0-f/4.5 aperture.
For selfies and video calls, the phone features a 13MP ultrawide autofocus front camera along with a 3D depth-sensing camera. Video recording is supported at up to 4K resolution.
Battery and Charging
The Mate 90 Pro Max is equipped with a 6,800mAh battery.
It supports 100W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging, giving the flagship a large battery capacity alongside its high-end camera hardware.
Price
The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max starts at approximately $1,417 for the 12GB RAM and 512GB storage model.
The 16GB/512GB version is priced at around $1,492, while the 16GB/512GB Collector’s Edition costs approximately $1,641.
The top-end 16GB/1TB Collector’s Edition is priced at around $1,940.
The optional Ruiying Z10 camera module costs approximately $900, while the complete Pro Max camera kit is priced at around $2,910. Huawei also offers a SmallRig teleconverter kit for approximately $270.
