ICC Faces $20 Million Loss from T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA
Colombo: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly faced financial losses of approximately USD 20 million from hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 matches in the United States, according to Indian media sources.
This financial setback is expected to be a key topic of discussion at the ICC Annual Conference, which begins Friday in Colombo. Although the issue is not listed on the formal agenda of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), it will be covered in a “post-event report.”
A notable highlight of the tournament was the high-profile match between India and Pakistan, which took place in New York.
Leadership Transition at ICC: Another major discussion point at the AGM will be the potential replacement of ICC Chairman Greg Barclay by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. According to an ICC source, the timing of Shah’s potential leadership transition is a key interest for many at the ICC.
Shah has one year remaining in his term as BCCI Secretary before a cooling-off period starts in 2025, according to the Indian board’s constitution. If Shah were to take over as ICC Chairman in 2025, Barclay would not be able to complete his third term from December 2024 to December 2026.
There is ongoing debate about whether the ICC’s chairmanship term structure should be altered from three two-year terms to two three-year terms, allowing for a total six-year term.
The speculation is that if Barclay’s current term is extended to three years, Shah could complete his BCCI term and assume the ICC Chairmanship in 2025 for a three-year term. Shah could then return to the BCCI presidency in 2028 after his ICC tenure.
