ICC Retains 50-Over ODI Format Following Annual Conference

ICC Retains 50-Over ODI Format Following Annual Conference

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that no decision has been made to reduce One-Day International (ODI) matches from 50 overs to 40 overs, putting to rest recent speculation surrounding a possible format change.

The matter was discussed as part of broader conversations about the future of international cricket during the ICC Annual Conference held in Edinburgh, but no formal proposal was approved.

No Change to ODI Format

During the conference, the ICC Board reviewed several topics related to the game’s future and its upcoming commercial cycle. However, officials did not announce any changes to the existing 50-over ODI format.

As a result, One-Day International cricket will continue to be played under the current format.

World Test Championship Expansion Still Under Review

The conference also did not produce any decision regarding the expansion of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).

There was no announcement about increasing the number of participating teams, meaning Afghanistan, Ireland, and Zimbabwe remain outside the current World Test Championship structure.

USA Cricket and Cricket Canada Suspensions Continue

The ICC confirmed that the suspensions of USA Cricket and Cricket Canada will remain in place while both organizations continue addressing governance-related matters.

USA Cricket has been under suspension since September 2025 due to governance and administrative concerns. The ICC acknowledged the importance of resolving these issues as cricket prepares to return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028, but no immediate change to its membership status was announced.

Cricket Canada will also remain suspended until it meets the ICC’s governance requirements.

Mauritius Becomes ICC Associate Member

In another development, the Mauritius Cricket Federation has been officially admitted as an ICC Associate Member.

With the addition of Mauritius, the ICC now has 111 member nations, including 12 Full Members and 99 Associate Members.

Meanwhile, France Cricket has been placed on notice as the ICC continues to monitor governance and administrative matters involving its member organizations.

The ICC Annual Conference took place in Edinburgh from July 8 to July 11, with discussions focusing on the future development, governance, and growth of international cricket.
