IHC directs meeting between Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi and lawyers in £190m case

Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court has directed authorities to arrange a meeting between former prime minister Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and their legal counsel within seven days to facilitate legal proceedings in the £190 million reference case.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif issued the order while hearing appeals against the conviction handed down by an accountability court.

During the hearing, counsel for Imran Khan informed the court that he had been unable to meet his client at Adiala Jail despite repeated attempts, preventing him from obtaining instructions and completing legal formalities, including the signing of the power of attorney.

The lawyer further stated that access to the detained former prime minister had been repeatedly denied by jail authorities, making it difficult to proceed with the appeals effectively.

The bench noted concerns over the denial of access to legal counsel, observing that it could affect the right to fair legal representation and the administration of justice.

The court instructed the advocate general Islamabad to ensure that meetings between the accused and their lawyers take place within the stipulated time so that necessary documentation and instructions can be completed.

Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023 and is serving a sentence in connection with the case, while Bushra Bibi was also convicted in the same reference by the accountability court in January 2025.
