Lyon Suffer First Defeat of the Season Against Lens in Ligue 1

Olympique Lyonnais missed the opportunity to move to the top of the French Ligue 1 standings after suffering a 2-1 defeat against RC Lens on Friday.
Lens secured the victory at the rain-soaked Stade Bollaert-Delelis, handing Lyon their first loss of the season. Florian Sotoca opened the scoring late in the first half before Matthieu Udol doubled the home side’s advantage in the 76th minute.
Lyon managed to pull a goal back through teenage midfielder Khalis Merah after Udol was sent off for a poorly timed challenge on the youngster. However, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle.
Lens End Winless Run With Important Victory
The result marked a significant turnaround for Lens, who had gone four league matches without a win. The victory lifted the club to seventh place in the Ligue 1 table and provided a timely confidence boost ahead of their Champions League fixture against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.
Yannick Cahuzac also celebrated his first victory as Lens coach after taking charge following the departure of Dino Toppmoller, who was dismissed last month after only six matches in the role.
Lyon Coach Highlights Defensive Problems
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca admitted that his team struggled defensively and failed to maintain possession during the match.
He said Lyon’s players were too spread out on the pitch and did not apply the intended pressing strategy. The team also lost possession too easily, allowing Lens to control much of the first half.
Fonseca acknowledged that preparation had been difficult because his players had only one day to work together following the international break. However, he stressed that the limited preparation time should not be treated as an excuse for the defeat.
Despite the setback, Lyon remain two points behind league leaders AS Monaco and will have an opportunity to respond in their upcoming fixtures.
European Fixtures Ahead for Both Clubs
Lens will turn their attention to Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Sporting Lisbon as they look to build on their domestic success.
Lyon, meanwhile, are preparing to host Crystal Palace in the Europa League on Thursday. The French side will aim to recover quickly from their first league defeat and maintain pressure on Monaco in the race for the Ligue 1 title.
