Neymar Hints at Brazil Exit After FIFA World Cup Defeat to Norway

Sports  Correspondent: Imran Sohail

July 6, 2026: Brazil forward Neymar Jr. has suggested that his international career may be over following Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The loss ended Brazil’s campaign and extended the country’s wait for a record sixth FIFA World Cup title.

Emotional Reaction After Elimination

Neymar scored Brazil’s only goal from the penalty spot during stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent elimination.

Speaking after the match, the 34-year-old appeared emotional and hinted that he may have played his final game for the national team.

“I tried, I tried… Now it’s over! I started here, I finished here,” Neymar said after the match.

His comments came shortly after Brazil’s exit from the tournament, although he has not officially announced his retirement from international football.

Brazil’s World Cup Campaign Ends Early

Brazil entered the tournament as one of the favorites but suffered a surprise defeat to Norway in the knockout stage.

The result marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit in decades and means the five-time world champions remain without a World Cup title since 2002.

If Brazil does not win the tournament in 2030, the country will have gone 28 years without lifting football’s biggest trophy.

Neymar’s International Career

If Neymar decides to retire from international football, he will conclude one of the most successful careers in Brazil’s history.

Brazil Career Statistics

Category Record
Appearances 130
Goals 80
Assists 58
Senior International Titles 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup

Throughout his international career, Neymar established himself as one of Brazil’s leading attacking players, contributing consistently with goals and assists across major tournaments.

Retirement Yet to Be Confirmed

Although Neymar’s post-match comments strongly suggested the end of his international career, the Brazilian Football Confederation has not announced his retirement, and the player has yet to issue an official statement confirming his future with the national team.
