Pakistan Faces Extended Power Outages as Electricity Demand Surges
Pakistan is currently experiencing a significant electricity shortfall, leading to extended power outages in various parts of the country. According to recent updates, the energy gap has reached around 6,500 megawatts, as demand continues to exceed available supply.
Electricity demand has risen to approximately 22,000MW, while total generation stands near 15,400MW. This imbalance is affecting both urban and rural areas, with many consumers facing longer-than-expected power interruptions.
The current energy mix includes contributions from multiple sources. Hydropower is generating about 1,500MW, thermal sources are producing around 9,250MW, while wind and solar energy contribute 1,200MW and 400MW respectively. Additionally, nuclear power accounts for roughly 2,850MW, and bagasse adds around 200MW to the grid.
As a result of the widening gap, several regions are experiencing electricity outages ranging from 8 to 16 hours. In some cases, residents have reported unannounced power cuts, adding to the inconvenience.
In Lahore, power interruptions have continued during nighttime hours. The Lahore Electric Supply Company has reported a shortfall of around 1,000MW in its service area, with peak demand reaching nearly 2,900MW.
Officials have attributed the situation to multiple factors. Reduced hydropower generation due to lower water releases from dams has played a major role. Additionally, limited fuel availability has impacted gas-based power plants, further constraining electricity production.
A senior official from the Petroleum Division Pakistan also noted that liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments are not expected until early May. This has increased reliance on domestic gas supplies, which remain limited.
The impact is being felt widely across Punjab and other regions, including areas served by the Multan Electric Power Company. Major cities such as Faisalabad and Kasur are also experiencing regular outages lasting several hours.
Overall, the situation highlights ongoing challenges in balancing electricity demand and supply, with authorities working to manage the shortfall and improve stability in the power sector.
