Pakistan May Be Eligible for Temporary US Licence to Import Russian Oil
Pakistan is among the countries that could potentially benefit from a new temporary energy arrangement announced by the United States, according to diplomatic sources.
The US has issued a 30-day general licence through the United States Department of the Treasury, allowing selected energy-importing nations to access Russian crude oil in an effort to ease pressure on global energy markets.
Diplomatic sources told media that Pakistan may be included in the list of countries eligible for this arrangement, although they noted that practical limitations could affect its ability to take full advantage of the opportunity.
Officials pointed out that Pakistan has not previously imported Russian crude on a large scale and may face technical challenges, including limited refining capacity, which could restrict its ability to process such oil shipments effectively.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the temporary licence is intended to help stabilise global crude oil supplies and provide relief to energy-vulnerable countries facing supply pressures.
He added that the measure is designed to improve market balance by allowing stranded oil supplies to reach countries in need, while also easing pressure on global energy markets.
According to officials, the initiative is part of broader efforts to manage volatility in international oil prices and ensure steady energy access for developing economies.
Further details regarding eligibility and implementation are expected to be shared with participating countries in the coming weeks.
