Pakistan Reduces Asian Games Contingent Ahead of 2026 Event

Pakistan’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games have faced a setback after the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) reduced the proposed national contingent from 123 members to 80.

The Asian Games are scheduled to take place in Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026. The decision has affected several athletes who had already begun intensive training after receiving earlier approval.

According to reports, national sports federations were informed in January 2026 that athletes and officials could begin preparations for the Games. However, a revised directive issued in mid-June reduced the squad size and withdrew financial support for several athletes, coaches, and support staff.

The reduction has impacted multiple sports, including athletics, boxing, kabaddi, shooting, and volleyball. In some cases, previously approved funding and participation slots have also been withdrawn.

The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) had already secured accreditation for the earlier approved list of athletes and officials based on the initial 123-member contingent.

Athletics has been among the most affected disciplines, with the number of supported athletes reportedly reduced. Similar changes have been reported in other sports where athletes had been preparing for international competition.

Sports analysts say the sudden revision may affect athlete preparation and morale, especially so close to the event, as many competitors had already structured their training and competition schedules around participation in the Asian Games.

The situation has raised concerns within the sporting community regarding consistency in planning and long-term support for athletes representing Pakistan at major international events.
