Shane McDermott Set to Join Pakistan Men’s Team as All-Format Fielding Coach
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to enhance its coaching setup with the reported signing of Shane McDermott, a respected Australian fielding specialist, as the men’s all-format fielding coach.
🏏 A Strategic Addition to Pakistan’s Coaching Staff
McDermott, 44, was among the final candidates shortlisted for the role and brings with him a strong track record across international and domestic cricket. He holds a High Performance Level Three Coaching Certificate and has previously worked with teams from Australia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.
His appointment aligns with the PCB’s renewed focus on improving fielding standards, an area that has long been a challenge for the national team.
🤝 Backed by Mike Hesson
Shane McDermott reportedly had the support of Pakistan’s new white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, with whom he has collaborated on earlier assignments. He is expected to officially join the team ahead of the T20I series against Bangladesh, marking the beginning of a busy schedule for Pakistan.
🌍 International Coaching Experience
McDermott brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as:
-
Assistant Fielding Coach with Bangladesh (2022–2023)
-
Senior Fielding Coach and Sri Lanka A Team Head Coach
-
Fielding Consultant with Afghanistan
-
Cricket Australia coaching staff, where he spent seven years at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane in roles including Fielding Coach, National A Team Analyst, and Interim Assistant Coach
🔄 A Step Toward Fielding Excellence
Pakistan’s fielding performances have been under scrutiny, particularly during major tournaments. The hiring of Shane McDermott is part of a broader effort to bring greater consistency and professionalism to the national setup under a restructured coaching framework.
📅 What’s Next for Pakistan?
The national team will begin its upcoming campaign with a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, followed by a potential five-match T20I tour of the West Indies. With these challenges ahead, McDermott’s arrival is expected to provide valuable insights and elevate the team’s fielding discipline across formats.
An official announcement from the PCB is expected soon.
