Pakistani Archaeologist Gul Rahim Khan Wins Prestigious Ashoka Prize in London
Pakistani archaeologist and academic Professor Gul Rahim Khan has been awarded the Oriental Numismatic Society Ashoka Prize 2025 in London in recognition of his outstanding research in the field of numismatics.
The prestigious award honors the best research paper published in the Journal of the Oriental Numismatic Society (JONS) during the year.
Award-Winning Research
Professor Khan received the award for his paper titled “Attribution of Coins to the Queens of the Utpala Dynasty of Medieval Kashmir”, published in JONS Issue 260.
His research examines historical coins associated with the queens of the Utpala Dynasty and explores their significance in understanding the political and social history of medieval Kashmir.
Contribution to Historical Research
Speaking about the recognition, Professor Khan said that coins often serve as valuable historical evidence, particularly when written records are limited or incomplete.
He noted that his research highlights the role of women rulers in medieval Kashmir and demonstrates how numismatic evidence can contribute to a better understanding of history.
Distinguished Academic Career
Professor Gul Rahim Khan has spent more than three decades working in higher education, archaeology, and academic research.
He previously served as a senior professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Peshawar and completed advanced doctoral research focusing on ancient coinage.
His academic work has largely centered on ancient monetary systems, trade networks, and the history of Gandhara and neighboring regions.
Contributions to Archaeology
Professor Khan has also participated in major archaeological excavations, including research at the historic Hayatabad site in Peshawar, where excavations uncovered evidence of early urban industrial activity.
He has emphasized the importance of preserving Pakistan’s archaeological heritage and has encouraged greater support for young researchers through the use of modern scientific techniques and archaeological methods.
The Ashoka Prize adds another significant achievement to Professor Khan’s academic career and highlights Pakistan’s growing contribution to international archaeological and historical research.
