Punjab Launches Electric Bike Sharing Initiative to Promote Green Transport in Lahore
The Punjab government has launched a new Green Mobility Initiative, introducing an electric bike-sharing system aimed at improving urban transportation and reducing air pollution in Lahore.
The project has been developed under a private-sector investment model with an initial investment of Rs8.1 billion, ensuring no direct financial burden on the public treasury.
A signing ceremony was held at the Civil Secretariat, where officials formally approved the agreement. Senior representatives from the provincial administration, including the Lahore Horticulture Agency, attended the event.
Project Overview
Under the initiative, 50,000 electric bikes will be introduced across Lahore in a phased rollout over the next 18 months. In the first phase, 10,000 e-bikes will be deployed to provide affordable and eco-friendly transport options for daily commuters.
To support the system, 1,500 smart docking stations will be installed at key locations, including parks, commercial areas, and major transport hubs across the city.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The initiative is designed to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner urban mobility. Officials estimate that the project could help cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 5,000 tonnes, contributing to efforts to improve air quality in Lahore.
In addition to environmental benefits, the program is also expected to reduce fuel consumption and support economic activity through new employment opportunities in operations and maintenance.
Technology and Operations
The e-bike system will use a battery-swapping model, allowing users to replace batteries quickly instead of waiting for charging. A dedicated mobile application will provide GPS tracking, booking services, and real-time monitoring.
User registration will require verification through CNIC to ensure secure and transparent usage.
Fare Structure
To keep the service affordable, the fare has been set at:
- Rs25 for the first kilometer
- Rs15 for each additional kilometer
Officials say the pricing has been designed to offer a low-cost alternative to conventional urban transport while supporting sustainable mobility goals.
The project is expected to play a key role in modernizing Lahore’s transport system and promoting environmentally friendly commuting options.
