Punjab Proposes Changes to School Holidays to Improve Academic Calendar
Apr 15, 2026
The Punjab Education Department is considering key changes to the academic calendar aimed at improving learning outcomes and ensuring timely syllabus completion.
Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has proposed increasing the number of teaching days to 180–190 days per year to address reduced classroom time.
📚 Key Proposals
- Reduction in summer vacations by 15 to 20 days
- Shortening of winter holidays by 5 to 6 days
- Alternate Saturday classes to maintain academic continuity
Officials believe that extended holidays reduce effective teaching time, making it difficult to complete the syllabus on schedule.
🗓 Separate Academic Planning
The proposals also include introducing separate academic calendars for:
- Matriculation students
- O Level and A Level students
This step aims to better align local education schedules with international examination timelines.
⚠️ Background
The proposed changes come after disruptions in March 2026, when schools remained closed due to regional developments and a fuel shortage, impacting regular academic activities.
