Scientists discover first-ever garnet in Martian meteorite NWA 8171

Scientists have identified a previously unknown mineral in a Martian meteorite, marking a significant discovery in planetary research.

The meteorite, known as NWA 8171 and housed in the Royal Ontario Museum’s collection, revealed grains of garnet — a mineral never before confirmed in a sample from Mars.

Researchers examined a very small fragment of the rock, measuring about 0.8 by 0.5 millimetres, and initially believed the material to be pyroxene, a common mineral. However, further analysis showed it to be andradite, a type of iron-rich garnet.

According to researchers, the mineral displayed a greenish-yellow colour, different from the deep red tones typically seen in Earth-based garnets.

Scientists say garnet formation on Earth usually occurs under high temperature, pressure, or significant chemical changes. The presence of this mineral in a Martian sample raises new questions about the geological conditions that may have existed on Mars.

Experts also note that garnets can preserve valuable information about the environment in which they form, potentially offering new insights into Mars’ geological history over billions of years.

The discovery is expected to help researchers better understand the planet’s past conditions and evolution.
