Six Injured After Powerful Earthquake Hits Northern Japan, Tsunami Waves Recorded

At least six people were injured after a strong earthquake struck northern Japan, according to local authorities. The quake also triggered small tsunami waves, though no major structural damage has been reported.

The earthquake, measured at magnitude 7.7, occurred offshore near Iwate Prefecture, causing tremors that were felt as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter.

Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that six people sustained injuries, including two in serious condition. However, there were no reports of major damage to critical infrastructure or widespread fires.

Following the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings, which were later lifted after waves reaching up to 80 centimeters were recorded in coastal areas, including Kuji port in Iwate.

Authorities also issued precautionary evacuation advisories for more than 180,000 residents in affected regions, although these were not mandatory.

Officials warned that the possibility of a larger earthquake remains higher than usual following the initial tremor, urging continued caution in coastal and seismic zones.

Japan is located in one of the world’s most active seismic zones, along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” and experiences frequent earthquakes each year.

The country has a long history of major seismic events, including the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which caused widespread destruction and loss of life in northeastern Japan.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as aftershocks remain possible in the region.
