Spain Edge Argentina 1-0 After Extra Time to Win FIFA World Cup 2026

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Spain are the 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in an intense final that was decided in extra time.

The match remained goalless throughout regular time, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find the breakthrough. Spain eventually sealed victory in the 106th minute when substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal, finishing calmly from inside the penalty area after reacting to a loose ball.

Argentina’s challenge became even more difficult late in normal time after midfielder Enzo Fernández received a red card, leaving the reigning champions to play with 10 men during extra time.

Spain’s defense once again proved to be the foundation of their success, limiting Argentina’s attacking chances and protecting their narrow lead until the final whistle. Throughout the tournament, Spain produced one of the strongest defensive performances in World Cup history, conceding just one goal in eight matches.

The victory marks Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their historic triumph in 2010. Their disciplined performances, tactical organization, and consistent displays throughout the competition earned them the championship.

For Argentina, the defeat brought an emotional end to their title defense. Lionel Messi, who had previously indicated that this would likely be his final FIFA World Cup appearance, finished the tournament as a runner-up after leading his nation to the 2022 title.

Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph will be remembered as a remarkable campaign built on defensive excellence, teamwork, and composure in the biggest moments.
