ICC to Decide Fate of World Club T20 Championship

(Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail)
World Club T20 Championship Still Unconfirmed, No Decision Made

The much-talked-about World Club T20 Championship remains a concept without official backing, as sources have confirmed that no formal decision has been made regarding the launch of such a tournament.

No Teams Excluded — Because No Tournament Exists

In recent days, speculation has emerged regarding potential exclusions from the proposed event—specifically reports suggesting that Pakistan’s PSL champions, Lahore Qalandars, might be left out. However, sources close to the matter have strongly dismissed those claims.

“There has been no decision to hold a tournament involving T20 league-winning teams,” said a source familiar with the ongoing discussions. “So, the question of excluding any team or league simply doesn’t arise.”

No Formal Talks Yet

Contrary to earlier rumors, insiders have confirmed that the topic of a World Club T20 was not on the agenda during recent international cricket meetings in England. Moreover, representatives from key leagues like the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Indian Premier League (IPL) were not present at those discussions.

Inspired by a Previous Concept

The idea of a global T20 club competition draws comparisons to the Champions League T20 (CLT20), which ran from 2009 to 2015. That event brought together top teams from various domestic leagues, including those from India, Australia, and South Africa. However, the CLT20 was eventually discontinued due to scheduling challenges and lack of sustained viewership.

Any modern version of that tournament would require International Cricket Council (ICC) approval, along with coordinated efforts from multiple cricket boards. So far, the ICC has not issued any public statements or taken formal steps to initiate such a global event.

A High-Potential Idea Still in Early Stages

Many major cricketing nations—including India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies—host successful T20 leagues. In theory, a tournament bringing together the champions of these leagues would attract significant global attention and commercial interest.

However, without an agreed-upon structure, timeline, or administrative backing, the World Club T20 remains just an idea for now.

Final Word

At this stage, Pakistan is neither excluded nor included—because the tournament simply doesn’t exist. Any future developments will depend on the ICC’s direction and the willingness of major cricket boards to collaborate on a high-profile, yet logistically complex, global competition.
