Novak Djokovic Battles Through Injury to Reach U.S. Open Fourth Round

Novak Djokovic says his tennis is still strong enough to compete for a record 25th Grand Slam title — but admits his body must keep up with the demands of the game.

The 38-year-old Serbian star overcame a back issue to defeat Britain’s Cam Norrie on Friday night, becoming the oldest man since Jimmy Connors in 1991 to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Djokovic claimed victory 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3, hitting 18 aces in what he described as his best serving display of the tournament.

So far, Djokovic has battled through multiple challenges in New York, including treatment for a blister in the opening round and a back concern in the third. “The wear and tear on the body all these years is taking a toll, and I’m aware of it,” he said. “But I’m resisting it and doing my best to still compete with the young guys at the highest level.”

The 24-time Grand Slam champion looked in danger when he required medical attention late in the first set, but he recovered strongly to book his place in the last 16 of a major for the 69th time — equaling Roger Federer’s all-time record.

Up next, Djokovic will face German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff, as he continues his pursuit of another milestone in a remarkable career.
