US Open 2025: Osaka and Auger-Aliassime Shine, Underdogs Rule Labour Day
Labour Day Monday at the US Open 2025 belonged to the underdogs, as Naomi Osaka and Felix Auger-Aliassime powered into the Grand Slam quarter-finals with commanding performances.
Naomi Osaka Back in Form
Four-time major champion Osaka dismantled third seed Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 in just 64 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, reaching her first Flushing Meadows quarter-final in five years. Osaka credited her team and a positive mindset for her resurgence.
“A big thank you to my team. We’ve been through a lot, it hasn’t been easy but they have been by my side,” Osaka said.
Gauff acknowledged Osaka as the favorite in the upset, despite serving better than earlier rounds.
Auger-Aliassime’s Statement Win
Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada also impressed, defeating 15th seed Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first major quarter-final since the 2022 Australian Open. The 25th seed highlighted mental focus and resilience after past injuries and confidence struggles.
Auger-Aliassime will face 8th seed Alex de Minaur, while Osaka meets 11th seed Karolina Muchova in the quarters.
Iga Swiatek and Defending Champion Sinner Advance
Iga Swiatek continued her dominant season, crushing 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1, becoming the youngest woman since Sharapova (2005) to reach the quarter-finals of all four majors in a year.
On the men’s side, defending champion Jannik Sinner overwhelmed Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, setting up a showdown with compatriot Lorenzo Musetti.
