Argentina Players Draw Attention After Displaying Banner Following World Cup Semi-Final Victory

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

rgentina’s celebrations after their 2-1 FIFA World Cup semi-final victory over England drew attention when two players were seen holding a banner carrying the message “Las Malvinas Son Argentinas” (“The Malvinas are Argentine”).

Defenders Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso were photographed displaying the banner while celebrating with supporters after the match. It has not been confirmed how the banner reached the players.

FIFA Rules on Political Messages

FIFA’s Stadium Code of Conduct restricts the display of political, offensive, or discriminatory messages inside official tournament venues.

At the time of publication, FIFA had not issued a public statement regarding the incident or indicated whether any disciplinary action would be considered.

Previous Similar Incident

This is not the first time the message has appeared in connection with Argentine football.

In 2014, FIFA fined the Argentine Football Association (AFA) after members of the national team displayed a similar banner before an international friendly. At the time, football’s governing body determined that the display breached its regulations concerning political messages at official football events.

Background to the Dispute

The Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, have been the subject of a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

The disagreement dates back many years and remains an issue of differing national positions. In 1982, the two countries fought a brief conflict over the islands before British forces regained control.

Today, the United Kingdom continues to administer the territory, while Argentina maintains its claim of sovereignty over the islands.

Political Symbols in International Sport

International sporting events have occasionally seen the display of political or national symbols by participants or spectators, prompting discussions about the separation of sport and politics.

FIFA’s regulations are intended to keep official competitions focused on football while limiting political messaging inside tournament venues.

Argentina’s victory secured a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, where the defending champions will face Spain in the tournament’s championship match.
