Italy and Spain Send Naval Support to Gaza Aid Flotilla
 September 26, 2025

ROME – Italy and Spain have deployed naval ships to assist an international aid flotilla that came under drone attacks while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The move could increase tensions with Israel.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, consisting of about 50 civilian vessels, is aiming to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. Among those on board are lawyers, parliamentarians, activists, and Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Italy’s Defence Ministry said a frigate sent on Wednesday to assist the flotilla would soon be replaced by another vessel. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized, “It is not an act of war or provocation, but an act of humanity—a duty of a state toward its citizens.”

The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Belgium, France, and other European countries requested support for their citizens on board.

Italy had suggested an alternative plan in which aid could be delivered to Cyprus and then handed over to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem for distribution in Gaza. However, the flotilla rejected this proposal, stating, “Our mission remains focused on breaking Israel’s blockade and delivering humanitarian aid directly to the people of Gaza.”
