Mobile Internet Services Suspended in Islamabad and Rawalpindi Amid Security Concerns

  October 10, 2025

Islamabad: The Ministry of Interior has ordered the suspension of 3G and 4G mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, citing security concerns. The directive, issued to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), went into effect at midnight (12am, October 10) and will remain in place until further notice.

Interior Ministry Issues Official Directive

According to an official letter dated October 9, the ministry stated that it had “accorded approval to suspend 3G/4G services in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi starting from 12am tonight till further orders.”

The letter, addressed to the PTA Chairman, instructed the authority to take “necessary action” in coordination with the Islamabad Commissioner, Inspector General of Police, and the Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer (RPO) to ensure implementation.

Reason Behind the Suspension

While the ministry has not publicly disclosed a reason for the decision, the move coincides with reports of a planned march by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) toward the US Embassy in Islamabad scheduled for Friday.

Officials said the internet suspension was part of a preventive security measure to maintain law and order and prevent the spread of misinformation or coordination of unlawful gatherings through social media platforms.

Government’s Position on the Protest

On Thursday, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said the government supports peaceful demonstrations but noted that TLP had not sought formal permission for the planned protest in the capital.

“Peaceful protests are a democratic right, but any activity without permission and proper coordination with authorities cannot be allowed,” Chaudhry said.

Violence Reported in Punjab

Late Thursday night, tensions flared in Punjab as police launched a crackdown at TLP headquarters to arrest the group’s chief, Saad Rizvi. The operation led to violent clashes, leaving several people injured, including dozen police personnel.

Authorities have increased security deployment across key locations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, including entry and exit points, in anticipation of possible unrest.

Citizens Advised to Stay Informed

Residents of the twin cities have reported disruptions in mobile internet services, affecting access to communication and online platforms. Authorities have urged the public to stay calm, avoid unnecessary movement, and follow verified news sources for updates.

Looking Ahead

The suspension of mobile internet services is expected to remain in place until the security situation normalizes. Officials said the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and to prevent any escalation of violence during the ongoing situation.
