Xi Jinping Expresses Confidence in China-Taiwan Unity During Meeting with Opposition Leader

BEIJING: Xi Jinping met with Taiwanese opposition leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing, expressing confidence that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will move closer over time.

Cheng, who leads the Kuomintang (KMT), is the first leader of the party to visit China in nearly a decade. Her trip has sparked discussion in Taiwan, with differing views on engagement with Beijing.

During the meeting, Xi said that closer ties between people in mainland China and Taiwan are part of a long-term trend. He also emphasized China’s willingness to maintain dialogue with Taiwanese groups that support peaceful relations.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory, while Taiwan maintains its own political system. High-level official communication between the two sides has been limited since 2016.

Cheng expressed hope for stability in the region, stating that both sides should work toward reducing tensions and avoiding conflict. She highlighted the importance of dialogue and long-term solutions for peace.

In recent years, cross-strait relations have remained sensitive, with increased military activity and political disagreements contributing to tensions. Taiwan’s leadership has raised concerns about regional security, while China continues to stress its position on territorial unity.

The visit comes ahead of a planned meeting between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, which is expected to include discussions on regional developments.

Cheng also visited cities including Shanghai and Nanjing during her trip, where she paid respects at historical sites.
