Miguel Almirón Sent Off After New Rule Incident at FIFA World Cup 2026

Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almirón became the first player in World Cup 2026 to receive a red card under a new rule after covering his mouth during a verbal exchange on the field.

The incident took place during stoppage time in the first half of Paraguay’s Group D match against Turkey in Santa Clara, California. Almirón and Turkey’s Mert Müldür were involved in a heated moment following a foul near midfield.

During the exchange, Almirón covered his mouth while speaking. The action was immediately reported to the referee, who reviewed the situation using video assistance.

After checking the replay, the referee issued a red card, sending Almirón off the field. The decision was made under a new regulation introduced for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite being reduced to 10 players, Paraguay managed to maintain their lead and secured a 1–0 victory.

After the match, Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro acknowledged the situation, stating that Almirón’s action led to the dismissal and that the team had to adjust after going a player down.

He also added that the player apologized to his teammates following the incident.

The match has drawn attention due to the unusual nature of the sending-off, highlighting strict enforcement of communication-related rules introduced for the tournament.
