Air India Removes Pilot From Duty After Reported Airspace Violation Near Pakistan

An Air India pilot has been removed from flying duties after an aircraft briefly entered Pakistani airspace while preparing to land at Amritsar, according to Indian media reports and statements from aviation authorities.

The incident involved Air India flight AI479, which was operating from Delhi to Amritsar on the night of June 22.

According to reports, the situation developed after another aircraft experienced a bird strike, prompting airport authorities to inspect the runway. During the inspection, arriving flights were instructed to remain in a holding pattern until further clearance was issued.

While awaiting permission to land under radar guidance, the Air India aircraft reportedly crossed approximately three miles into Pakistani airspace before the deviation was identified.

Indian aviation authorities said Pakistani air traffic control was informed immediately, allowing the aircraft to return to Indian airspace. The crew then attempted another approach to Amritsar, but the flight was later diverted back to Delhi because of fuel considerations.

Following the incident, Air India removed the pilot from active duty and initiated an internal investigation. The airline confirmed that the aircraft was involved in a minor airspace deviation during the landing phase and stated that the relevant aviation authorities had been notified.

Media reports also said that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against an air traffic controller at Amritsar Airport for allegedly failing to report the incident promptly.

The investigation is expected to determine the circumstances that led to the temporary airspace violation and whether any additional operational or procedural changes are required to prevent similar incidents in the future.
